Keynotes

Mark Dickey-Collas

Former ICES Advisory Committee Chair Mark is an experienced marine scientist operating independently as DickeyCollas Marine. Mark values diversity and equity in marine science and specialises in facilitation, knowledge for policy development, and the strategic development of global marine science programmes, including across Europe and North America. Mark has world leading expertise in ecosystem-based management, and the provision of scientific advice to on marine conservation, fisheries, and biodiversity.

Manuel Hidalgo

Dr. Manuel Hidalgo is a fisheries ecologist and ecosystems oceanographer working at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, CSIC). Manuel’s main research focuses on understanding the complexity of the impact of fishing activity and climate variability on the ecosystem. Manuel has been involved in scientific committees and working groups for the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), and ICES and has contributed to marine assessments for intergovernmental climate panels.

Kathy Mills

Dr. Katherine Mills is a senior research scientist at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, Maine. Kathy studies marine ecosystem changes and fish-ecosystem-fishery relationships with a focus on the Gulf of Maine and Northeast US Shelf regions. Much of her work is interdisciplinary and collaborative, working with scientists and stakeholders to understand and inform management of fisheries as coupled social-ecological systems and to support climate adaptation and resilience in marine fisheries.

Caterina Fortuna

Caterina is a marine conservation biologist with over 25 years of professional experience on cetaceans, marine turtles population dynamics; environmental risk assessment; international policies; and implementation of conservation and management tools. She provides advice on these issues to the Italian Ministries of Ecological transition, of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (Fishery General Directorate) and of Foreign Affairs (General Directorate for Global Issues).

Eva Plaganyi-Lloyd

Éva’s research focuses on using multidisciplinary approaches, models such as MICE (Models of Intermediate Complexity for Ecosystem assessment), and engaging with stakeholders to develop sustainable marine and fisheries management solutions that are robust to climate change. She is a senior principal research scientist and research group leader based at CSIRO, Australia and has collaborated extensively internationally, including as a member of the SEAwise Advisory Board.

Symposium Conveners

Anna Rindorf

Anna is the Project Coordinator of SEAwise, and recently elected head of department at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Aqua. Anna’s research encompasses species interactions, spatial distribution, and the growth of fish species in the North Sea. She enjoys unravelling the challenges of ecosystem management by studying biological processes and working out how to adapt human activities in response. She also has extensive experience participating in and leading advisory groups, including several ICES working groups.

Nikos Zampoukas

Nikos Zampoukas is a policy officer in the European Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, developing research and innovation policy for fisheries and aquaculture. Nikos has also served as a scientific officer in the European Commission Joint Research Centre where he worked on ecological assessment methods under the water framework directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

Isabella Bitetto

Isabella leads SEAwise's Social and Economic Effects of and on Fishing work theme. Isabella’s research centres on modelling fish population dynamics, and she is the developer of the BEMTOOL model which incorporates biological, social, and economic factors affecting fisheries. Isabella is closely involved in stock assessments for the Mediterranean via the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean stock assessment working groups.

Marta Ballesteros

Marta Ballesteros strives to generate actionable knowledge at the science-policy interface. Her research in fisheries governance shows the importance of social sciences in informing EBFM decision-making. She firmly believes collaboration across disciplines and meaningful engagement with stakeholders are essential for addressing complex marine challenges at local, regional, national, and global levels.

Geir Huse

IMR. Bio coming soon...

Marie Savina-Roland

Marie’s research interests include population dynamics and ecosystem modelling, as well as Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management and fisheries sustainability. As part of SEAwise, Marie leads the work theme on the ecological effects on fisheries.

Marija Sciberras

Marija’s research interests lie in understanding the effects of anthropogenic activities including bottom fishing on marine benthic ecosystems, their functioning and resilience. She has worked closely with the scallop fishing industry in the UK to develop innovative gear technology to reduce environmental impacts of the fishery. Marija also chairs the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) working groups on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs.

Dave Reid

Former SEAwise researcher and work theme lead, Dave Reid is the current appointed Chair of the ICES scientific committee, and principal investigator on EBFM at the Marine Institute in Ireland. He has worked for over 28 years in fisheries management on fisheries sustainability, fishing capacity and effort, industry collaboration, integrated ecosystem assessment and ecological risk analysis.

Maria Grazia Pennino

Maria Grazia’s research focuses on spatial and statistical modelling of marine ecosystems, with a particular interest in integrating environmental, ecological, and anthropogenic drivers to inform Ecosystem-Based Management. She has contributed extensively to European projects on fisheries, biodiversity, and marine spatial planning, and plays an active role in international expert groups under the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

Athanassios Tsikliras

Athanassios teaches undergraduate zoology and fish biology and co-ordinates a postgraduate course on Fisheries Biology and Management. His research focuses on fish biology and fisheries, stock assessment and management of Mediterranean fisheries, the effect of climate on marine populations, and ecosystem modelling/management. He has participated in 45 research projects and coordinated 15 of them, including the H2020 Project EcoScope, and has co-chaired the ICES Working Group on Small Pelagic Fishes.

Lotte Worsøe Clausen

Lotte is the head of the advice department at ICES, and leads and supports a diverse team of scientists and experts who provide operational and integrated advice on the marine ecosystem in an ecosystem management perspective. She is a trained marine biologist with a passion for understanding and protecting the multidimensional nature and biodiversity of marine ecosystems. Lotte works to integrate human dimensions into science-to-policy inputs to the governance of our environment.

Elisabetta Morello

Joost Paardekooper

Joost spent 25 years working in (European) fisheries management, including at the European Commission - always focusing on the sustainable development of European fisheries. Joost has worked on the latest reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, and, as manager, was responsible for the science, research, and data collection agenda. Joost was also chief negotiator in the field of international negotiations with Coastal States in the north-east Atlantic.
